Reinvention

The following is NOT about Arnold. I just read a story about an American guy who was a pretty big nerd, low self-esteem, etc. One day he decided to "re-invent" himself as a normal kid from Australia, and started lifting weights, liking sports, and..talking in an Australian accent. With a new life in tow, he meets a girl, and they begin dating. The problem is, this entire time she believes he's Australian, and he starts freaking when she insists to meet his family.

Thought #1: Concept of re-invention. I'm sure many of you have, or have seen people who have, gone through a drastic re-up. Maybe some of you fantasize about it. I'm already remembering a handful of girls who have completely changed themselves, especially when it comes to attracting boys. It's funny that when I see someone who has gone through a major change, there is that subtle underlying idea of "I remember what you were like before this". I think its cool that we are able to do this, as I also would like to project myself socially in a completely new way should I ever move out of this city. It's just too awkward to do it when everyone already knows you.

Thought #2: Accents. Are accents just good conversation starters, or are people really that drawn to accents? I gotta admit, a strong accent is fun to talk to.

  1. I've thought of doing the same thing minus the accent. I feel like I'd mess it up reeeal bad.

  2. interesting...My friend and I have been lknown to talk in a british accent and whenever we do...we become the life of the party, people really do seem drawn to it.

  3. I believe thought number two to a certain extent, but I have found that when people hear my Florida style southern accent they automatically assume that I am either undereducated or a Republican....

  4. I agree about the re-invention thing. Not to mention the fact that if you reinvent yourself so that people like you for how hot you are, what's going to happen when personalities clash? It's all very tricky, but as long as the person you're becoming is part of the person you already are, just hidden under the layers, I think it will work out fine.

  5. That picture of Arnold is awesome.

I always liked the idea of re-inventing myself, but it's much harder than it seems.

  6. Mr. A can do a perfect impression of Arnold.
That is NOT the reason I fell in love with him.

  10. I never have "transformed" but I've been changing throught time, I manned (?) up, I got less socialy retarded, and I'm trying to be a bit more open to society and people...

  11. People sometimes judge based on accents too.

  12. So, is this a story about you? Come on, be honest. Hehe. ;) Just kidding.

Seriously though while it's fun to reinvent yourself, it gets old after a while. You can never really get away from yourself, I think. It always comes back to bite you in the end. Especially if it involves another country. :P

  13. I am amused (in a cute way) when girls have a heavy accent (sometimes depends on the girl ;)

  14. I was told once that I had an "adorable american accent." I guess everyone has accents, it all depends on what part of the world you're in...

  15. Reinventing yourself is silly. You are who you are. Just tweak your outlook a bit. Shoot for better. And accents are hot during esx.

  16. I've noticed people do seem to be drawn to accents

  17. i would think accent would get annoying after a while, reinvention isnt important - confidence is

  18. I love these stories, about how some lowly nerd completely changed his life around!

  19. I remember I tried to talk with an English accent back in high school. It kind of worked a bit until I didn't know how to talk without it. And then it all just went away.

    I miss that accent.

  20. I don't know if it's because my english is sooo bad or if it's because i'm tired, but I don't understand anything -__-

  21. Interesting read. I've actually been tinkering with the whole theme of "Changing yourself" for some stuff i have brewing up in my skull cavity. Progress is good, but remember to make yourself "backwards compatible" just in case other's havent upgraded to your new person.

  22. I understand how that must be weird. It happens to everyone sort of stuck inbetween

  23. When I moved here, I was thinking about going blonde. No one would know what I looked like before.....

Of course, I would have looked like crap as a blonde....(thank goodness for computer simulations)....so much for that idea!

  24. Accents are definitely both good conversation starters and I believe people are drawn to them as well. I met a Korean with an Australian accent and thought it was the coolest thing ever

  25. i agree i love people with accents.

  26. I find that I get drawn to interesting accents. Just makes conversations sound a lot more interesting than it actually is XD

And as for the reinvention thing. Really interesting perspective on that, how we kinda adapt to other people's requirements.

  27. I find accents really interesting, as it shows the difference between regions and other localities simply through the way someone sounds. Great post by the way, keep it coming!

  28. I remember after losing a lot of weight at one point, I did a drastic self-reinvention. New glasses, shaved all facial hair and went from long to short haircut. Some people barely recognized me.

  29. self-reinvention is important of the following reason: it gives you self-esteem without really changing yourself. this is really important in life.

  30. There are certain accents which are really fun to hear...

  31. i dont like the concept of reinvention, but thats because i tried so hard to be who i am right now

  32. Accent is a great convo starter, no doubt about it... Still a bit too much fluff usualyl, but, better that then nothing.

As for re-invention, the issue there is to deal with the past first otherwise you will push all those from the past away from your self for they remind you of it.

Tough thing to do, but possible.

    ReplyDelete
  33. i think of re inventing myself a bit, not on this scale but it can be easily done

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think reinventing the image is alright, but pretending you're from another country is not okay if you're serious about a relationship. There is simply no way that it could end well.

    ReplyDelete
  35. That's not really reinvention. That's just lying.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree with you on the accents part. Being from Nebraska, I have no accent at all and I'm proud of that.

  37. Great blog man, i'll be following.

  38. That's so funny that he took it that far.

@PvtCarlin - you most certainly do have an accent - everybody does. To me, you have an accent, as you speak differently from me.

    ReplyDelete
  39. A complete re-invention can be a bit dodgy, but it never hurts to improve yourself

  40. Accents are interesting, but sometimes it baffles me to see a person who's lived all his life in an African village speaking Swahili, could switch just like that after, say, 3 months in the US.
